Tuesday’s snowstorm – pulling in the cold air

From the National Weather Service Forecast Discussion for the NYC office….

LIGHT SNOW DEVELOPS FROM WEST TO EAST TUESDAY MORNING…AND SNOW
WILL BECOME MODERATE TO HEAVY BY TUESDAY EVENING. ALTHOUGH DRY IN
THE MORNING…2-4 INCHES OF SNOW IS LIKELY BY THE EVENING COMMUTE.
MODERATE TO HEAVY SNOW CONTINUES TUESDAY NIGHT INTO WEDNESDAY
MORNING.
. . . . .
HIGHS DURING THE PERIOD WILL BE BELOW NORMAL…WITH THE LIKELIHOOD
THAT MOST LOCATIONS DO NOT SEE ABOVE FREEZING TEMPS THROUGH NEXT
MON. THE POSITIVE UPPER TROUGH ORIENTATION DICTATES THAT THE SHORT
WAVE ENERGY MOVING THROUGH WITHOUT AN UPSTREAM BLOCK LENDS TO
LITTLE PRECIPITATION WITH ANY OF THESE SYSTEMS…MAINLY JUST
REINFORCING SHOTS OF COLD AIR. THERE IS A STRONG FRONTAL SYSTEM
MOVING THROUGH ON SAT EVE THAT MAY BE ACCOMPANIED BY SNOW
SHOWERS…THEN A CLIPPER LOW EARLY NEXT WEEK THAT MAY FEATURE SOME
LIGHT SNOW. THESE FAST MOVING SYSTEMS TEND TO PRODUCE LITTLE
PRECIPITATION UNLESS THERE IS SIGNIFICANT AMPLIFICATION OF THE
UPPER TROUGH.

THE COLDEST DAYS WILL BE THU AND FRI WITH HIGHS IN THE 20S…AND
OVERNIGHT LOWS IN THE SINGLE DIGITS TO MID TEENS. PERIODS OF GUSTY
WEST WINDS WILL PRODUCE WIND CHILL VALUES BELOW ZERO. FOR SAT AND
SUN…READINGS RETURN TO NEAR FREEZING AT THE COAST…BUT THIS MAY
BE TOO OPTIMISTIC FOR SUN WITH STRONG COLD ADVECTION BEHIND THE
COLD FRONTAL PASSAGE. HIGHS MON WILL AGAIN FAIL TO GET OUT OF THE
20S.

After the storm, no large storms on the horizon. Just cold fronts keeping us in the cold air at least through early next week.
