So much going on that I’ll cover in additional entries this weekend.
I have a four day weekend, thanks to a Federal Holiday on Thursday and an unpaid furlough day on Friday, thanks to the Congressional-mandated sequester slashing funding for my federal agency.
So, first, if you go out for fireworks this weekend and happen to be facing westward after sunset, you might notice a bright ‘star’ sitting there just above the horizon.
Those watching the Macy’s fireworks from the Manhattan side – if you are looking directly out toward NJ, this bright dot, you’ll see the planet Venus, will be less than 10 degrees above the horizon, if the NJ skyline doesn’t get in the way. Venus might even get in some of your photos!
If you want more planets, Saturn is the left one of the two bright stars about half-way up in the southern sky, to your left if you’re facing Saturn.
Here’s a sky chart for after sunset, good for the next week or so….
