The Moon is out of line

Here’s the planetary lineup for Tuesday night, June 15, 2010:  Venus, the brightest dot, is in the lower right corner, with the Moon to its left, then diagonally to the upper left, Regulus, Mars and in the upper left corner, Saturn.

Canon Rebel 10 second exposure on a tripod, ISO 800, F5.6.  Click on the photo to make it easier to see the fainter planets.  You can see these planet without optical aid, about an hour after sunset.  Look toward the area of the sky where the sun set earlier (where it is still bright).  The moon will pass by Mars on Thursday and Saturn on Friday.

From lower right to upper left, Venus, Moon, Regulus, Mars, Saturn
